Character Development

Why mind, heart and hand?

Aristotle once argued that nothing could be understood which hadn’t been experienced through the senses. Accordingly, we believe that practical learning and practical experience, offered by the Landheim in so many different areas, are indispensable for the education of future generations.

The blacksmith’s workshop exists, not to train future blacksmiths, but to show young people what they can learn from a blacksmith for their own future. In the pottery workshop it’s not about molding perfect sculptures for sale on the market, but rather familiarizing oneself with the sculptor’s clay and blending it with one’s own skill and creativity.

In our various workshops, in athletics, in music, as well as in community service and in Round Square projects it is the process, the road to achieving the goal, which really counts. Creativity, respect for others, team spirit, commitment, a strong will, perseverance, responsibility for the task, the group and the environment, interpersonal skills which can serve as a foundation for the high demands of a future career: these are the essential elements of the learning process based on mind, heart and hand.
